Originally from the United States, James came to Australia in 1977 to take up the position of Principal Flute with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. Subsequently he has been Principal Flute with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and Second Flute with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. James has also performed with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Philharmonia Orchestra, Hunter Sinfonia and Pacific Opera Orchestra.As a chamber musician James was a founding member of the chamber ensemble Collage and regularly appears as guest artist with The Grevillea Ensemble.
Prior to his current position at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, James was Lecturer in Flute at the University of Newcastle Conservatorium of Music. In 2005 James received the Master of Arts (Music) degree from the University of Newcastle for his text The Purposeful Flautist: Technique to Interpretation.
Active as a clinician throughout Australia, James has also appeared as guest artist at flute conventions and festivals held in Sydney, Brisbane, Coffs Harbour, Canberra, Christchurch and Hamilton, New Zealand, plus given master classes in England, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Russia. A devoted ‘yogi’, in 2012 James completed the Advanced Diploma of Yoga Teacher Training at the Yoga Institute, Cammeray, NSW. He has taught at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Australian Institute of Music, The Shepherd School of Music, Rice University, Houston, Texas, Buonconvento, Italy and Christchurch, New Zealand. James plays a silver custom handmade Haynes flute, and is proud to be a Haynes Artist.
Andrew Macleod
Andrew Macleod has held the Principal Piccolo position with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra since 2003. Andrew has played as a guest with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic, Auckland Philharmonia, Christchurch Symphony as well as the Sydney, Adelaide, Tasmanian and Queensland Symphony Orchestras. Andrew has also performed with the Australian World Orchestra.
Originally from Brisbane, Andrew studied flute and piccolo with Jeanette Manricks at the University of Queensland, where he was awarded a Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours. After completing his Master of Philosophy in Music at The University of Queensland, Andrew continued his music education, studying in the UK with renowned teacher, Trevor Wye. Andrew has appeared as a soloist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra on numerous occasions, and in June 2013 gave the world premiere of Paul Stanhope’s Concerto for Piccolo Flute with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, a work co-commissioned by the Melbourne, Adelaide and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras. The recording of the performance was released on the MSO LIVE label by the ABC, and in 2014 the album was nominated for an ARIA in the Best Classical Album category.
Andrew teaches at The University of Melbourne, the Australian National Academy of Music, and is a guest lecturer at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Along with James Kortum, Lecturer in Flute at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Andrew is Co-Director of The Complete Flute, which offers comprehensive courses for performers and teachers. In 2021, Andrew completed his yoga teacher training through Integral Yoga and is now a qualified yoga instructor. Andrew is a Yamaha Artist and plays a Yamaha YFL- 877 Custom Handmade Flute.
Mardi McSullea
Mardi McSullea began her music studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in Sydney, studying flute with Victor McMahon and Margaret Crawford, and piano from Nancy Salas. Grants from the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Trust Fund for Young Australians and Australia Council enabled her to study in New York with Thomas Nyfenger and work with distinguished musicians including Michael Parloff, Marcel Moyse, Robert Dick, Harvey Sollberger and Carl Schachter. She has had a sustained passion for contemporary music performance with early opportunities to work with the Australian Contemporary Music Ensemble and Sydney Dance Company and later with the New Jersey Percussion Ensemble, Erik Hawkins Dance Company in New York; and Pipeline, Chambermade Opera and Astra Chamber Society in Melbourne.
Mardi McSullea has appeared as soloist with the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, the Brandenburg Ensemble in New York, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Chamber Orchestra and the New Jersey Percussion Ensemble and given recitals in Europe, America and the Asia-Pacific region. Mardi has recording chamber and solo works for the ABC Classic FM and for CD release and published the two-volume set: Contemporary Australian Flute for Currency Press with co-editor Lawrence Whiffen.
Formerly Head of Woodwind at the Faculty of Music University of Melbourne, she has been enjoyed Artist in Residence at La Trobe University Music Department, at the Sibelius Academy in Finland, Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, School of Music University of Auckland and Queensland Conservatorium. She is currently an Honorary Staff member at Melbourne University and undertaking a research degree at Griffith University.
